“My spouse just doesn’t understand me” is an extremely popular quote that has been around for many years dooming relationships and would be caused by too much or too little self-disclosure. Self-disclosure is the act of revealing personal information to someone for self-validation, manipulation, or simply relationship maintenance. Enlightening too much or too little about one-self before a relationship is established is the cause of many relationships not growing properly, if at all.

Obviously motives for disclosure depend on several factors. With strangers, a common reason for self-discloser would be to learn more about the stranger; a kind of give and take relationship. Also, Manipulation is used as a calculated, premeditated way of getting the desired response. On the other hand, in a relationship, the primary cause is self-clarification. Self-clarification, like discussing things such as, beliefs, opinions, feelings, and attitudes, as well as thoughts with someone else, is a highly publicized reason; this goes hand in hand with,” I would like to get to know you better”

Relationships are an important part of life and, as a whole, good relationships as well as bad relationships, are extremely reliant on what one knows of the other person.

If self-disclosure is honest, the relationship can flourish or grow, assuming that the two persons have disclosed many items that they have in common. In contrast, a bad relationship usually starts with dishonesty (disclosing things that are not true) and continues, though it probably should not, with one or both parties lying or exaggerating throughout the relationship. In most cases, these untruthful disclosures are found out and the relationship sours, somewhat, not necessarily ending the relationship, but screwing up the trust that should be in a relationship.

Self-disclosure can probably be dissected into several strategies that will assist one in the relationship or type of relationship one wants to establish. In anything other than a highly personal relationship, how much disclosure and the type of disclosure should be relevant to the situation. The wrong amount or type of self-disclosure, of course, to the wrong people would be a tool used and abused, to get back at a person. On revealing one self to other people, one should be couscous. Being positive, clear and equal,(for example, when two people talk and one doesn’t say anything or disclose much,) are very important also.

In conclusion, self-disclosure in itself can and will ruin a relationship. Not only personal relationships but also impersonal relationships such as relationships with neighbors or co-workers and management. It wouldn’t take much imagination to figure out that some things should be left unsaid around certain people. Alternately, to keep from being one of the spouses “that doesn’t understand,” by not disclosing information in the relationship, one should continue throughout the relationship to give as much as he or she gets.
Understanding nonverbal communication begins in the earliest stages of childhood. Early in life, a child learns to identify, such feelings as; happiness, sadness, rage, excitement and other moods in adults and other children alike, as well as in pets. Responses like, doors slamming, loud voices, smiles, frowns, crying; are all some of the nonverbal communication that as a child, one grows up with and learns from. With high-strung emotions caused by puberty, teenagers become masters of nonverbal communications. And finally as adults we tend to find hidden meanings in most nonverbal communications as well as in verbal communication creating an arguing society. Example: Betty says, “That’s not what I said!!!” Bob says, “Well that’s what you meant!”

Ambiguous nonverbal communication has become the main subject matter for many situation comedy’s or “sit-com’s”. As I recall, I Love Lucy, Three’s Company, and the more recent sitcoms, Married with Children, and Seinfield are all sitcoms based on ambiguous nonverbal and verbal communication. (The actors would get different meanings than the audience would, so the audience would get two different sides throughout the entire episode.)

Ambiguous nonverbal communication can be anything from body positioning (kinesics or body orientation) to gestures (movements of the hands and arms), or eye contact, or smiles taken by different people differently. You see nonverbal communications all the time in daily life by people you do and don’t know. For instance, one can be questioned for standing or sitting too close to someone else. Also, sitting at a stop sign, you may see someone twirling his or her hair. It may mean nervousness, thought, habit, or perhaps they just have something in their hair. I, personally, have been accused of flirting with a waitress just by simply smiling at her. This wouldn’t be the first time that a smile or gesture has been misinterpreted; or the last time. I am as guilty of this as anyone, it’s hard to believe, but people say I am that way.

In doing research, I have noted that the less you know someone the harder it is to accurately read his or her “gestures” if you will, but on the other hand, sometimes knowing a person, and being familiar with his or her behavior, better equips you to understand most of their verbal and nonverbal interactions. Also let me add, you must strongly study people that are skilled to deceive such as politicians, salesmen and actors or actresses.

In the recent weeks I have been paying closer attention and have noticed many things that I wouldn’t have noticed a couple of weeks ago, pertaining to chapter six. The dictionary definition of ambiguous is: (adj. open to various interpretations; having a double meaning.) By reading between the lines I can safely say that all nonverbal communications can be ambiguous. Interpretation by male or female, old or young, good mood or bad mood, could all possibly warrant uncertain responses and faulty analysis.

In conclusion, gestures (illustrators, emblems, adaptors,) and other types of nonverbal communications are a basic part of our complicated society. Animals, on one hand, can communicate what they want or the mood they’re in just by something they do, because this nonverbal communication is less complex, on the other hand, in our society, intelligence, along with gestures, body orientation, posture, and verbal communication, inhibits our understanding of communications.

Most women wear maternity clothes around the fourth month of pregnancy. Also it is important to wear maternity under garments , or larger size more comfortable fitting under garments.

It wasn’t until 1962 that seats were invented in England by Jeans Ames with the purpose of protecting a child. Did you know, although child seats were beginning to be manufactured in the early 1930s, their purpose was not for the safety of children. The purpose was to act as booster seats to bring the child to a height easier for the driving parent to see them.

Restraints were put into place to protect adults. Before these seats, (child seats,) were invented, there were 2,000 children’s deaths, under the age of fourteen, every year, in automobile accidents; in the United States. And, another 320,000 are injured each year. These injuries and deaths are not just a result of the severity of the accidents themselves, but, are related to the number of children, ‘not being properly restrained,’ within the vehicles. These children are either completely unrestrained, or, strapped in with adult seat belts.

In 1990, the International Organization for Standardization launched the ISOFIX standard, in an attempt to provide a standard for fixing car seats into different makes of cars. The Car seat vs. Booster topic is a prime example. Did you know that each state has specific laws regulating how old, how tall, and how heavy your kids should be before making the switch? Just because the seat you're purchasing claims that it is made for 30-100 lbs does not mean that you can safely switch your hefty 2 1/2 yr. old as soon as he hits the big 3-0. There are many other factors that go into the decision to graduate – some of them are even specific to your individual child! Most states have a firm policy that children should not leave the protection of a car seat until they are at least 4 years old and 40 lbs. That means that 4 years/40 lbs. is the earliest you should consider down-grading to the booster.

Here are a few other safety tips when it comes to car seats AND boosters: Some important issues to consider when thinking about making the switch:

o How wiggly is your child? Will they stay properly restrained by a basic lap/shoulder belt?

o How often are you driving for long periods? Longer rides mean more opportunities for children to get antsy and shift out of proper seat belt placement.

o Does you child often fall asleep in the car? Again, this can make the car seat a safer restraint option.

o How tall is your child as opposed to your lap belt? No matter how heavy they are, the shoulder belt can be very dangerous if it's sitting too high on shorties (like mine!). -

MAKE SURE to replace your car seat with a booster when the time does come to switch. A recent report states that 94% of parents go straight to shoulder/lap belt only when they ditch the car seat, with dangerous repercussions. Average and even modestly tall children do not sit high enough on their own to properly position the shoulder belt until they are at least 8-years-old (which is also the law in most states, by the way). The booster seat adds those extra needed inches to make sure the seat belt can do it's job when your kiddo needs protection.

Children are very precious so please follow all legal guidelines. We must protect and love our babies. My topic for next will be Feeding high chairs.

No mater who you are, there are definite rules of etiquette to stay on the right side of a hormonal, pregnant woman. Read and learn.

It has been said that pregnant women are assisting God with a miracle. As you may be aware, assisting with miracles is a tremendous undertaking. While women are in the process of creation of life, they may be a little sensitive in some areas. This is written so that whether you are a soon-to-be daddy, a mother-in-law, a friend, neighbor or casual acquaintance you will not blunder into these three social unacceptable, albeit, well meaning mistakes. Observe and implement the following three rules and this will keep you from experiencing a little wrath from the miracle worker's mouth. There are many more cautions to be sure but these three are meant to keep you on the right side of any expectant mother.

Rule Number One: Never, ever, ever comment on the size and shape of the growing belly. If you are not sure if a woman is pregnant, don't assume that she is! If you are absolutely sure that the woman you are addressing is pregnant, do not suggest that she has gained too much weight or hasn't gained enough. With maternity clothes styles and non-maternity styles it is difficult to tell if a woman has simply gained weight or is pregnant. Never inquire as to what month the baby is due. Any conversation about weight is strictly off-limits with any woman, at any time, in any situation. This is especially true if the woman is pregnant. This warning is for husbands, fathers, mothers, best friends, and in-laws. Whatever you are thinking is best left unsaid. You will just have to trust me on this one. One casual comment about size, weight and shape and you will know the truth of these words. Oh, this goes for comments that you think may be humorous… there is nothing funny to the mommy-in- waiting about waddling instead of walking or thick, swollen ankles.

Rule Number Two: Unless you have a written, engraved invitation and express verbal permission, do not touch the belly. For some reason, when that beautiful belly is out there for everyone to see and there is no mistake that the woman is pregnant, unthinking people will just pat or rest their hand on the belly. This is a pregnancy phenomenon that absolutely does not happen to women who are not pregnant. Asking for permission or waiting to be invited to touch the belly is always the better option. This rule applies to everyone, man, woman and child. Always ask before touching.

Rule Number Three: When a woman is pregnant, there are things that she is willingly giving up in order to have a healthy baby. Caffeine and alcohol are among the enjoyed substances that pregnancy will put on hold. At a gathering, lunch or party is is not necessary to point out that the pregnant woman is not imbibing, and therefore she cannot be having any fun, or that she can't be any fun…that she is a wet blanket or a drag on the other guests. Not only is this untrue but pointing out what she is "giving up" does not support the higher calling. It is best to support the pregnant woman by supporting her noble sacrifices with verbal support.

There are, of course many other discretions that will keep you on the good side of the gestating woman. If you use some common sense, practice the golden rule and think before you speak, you will not risk the wrath of the other side of heaven. A few well chosen words and an attitude of thinking before you act or speak will keep you on the heavenly side of this miracle worker

While, baby showers are usually given before the baby arrives, some mothers choose to give the baby shower after the arrival of the baby. Some mothers, also, have display table set up at specified stores, with their name and gifts that you may choose from. At baby showers, where, you choose your own gift, I try to choose items that will be useful for a long time, but, babies always need plenty of diapers , clothes, wipes, lotions, powders, etc…..

Some moms have certain colors for their baby boy or girl, so, I check with the mom before hand, to see if the proud parents are having boy or girl.

We all think that baby neccessities are a huge list and much more to keep on shopping. The fact is that the new baby has very little needs that can also be termed as basic baby items, which are also called as layette. We just have to check if these basic things are there in your baby stock.

Here is a list of the basic needs which will help you get prepared for the welcome of the new born with very little shopping.

First comes the clothes and the set or quantity depends on the parents like how much of each type you would like to stock. You can keep 5 of each type or more as it depends on your laundry. The clothing is onesies, rompers, sleepers or night wear, seasonal night wear, special for cold season, baby socks and hats if the weather permits

Next are the baby toiletries and other things. This also you can stock the required amount as it depends on how often you shop. The toiletries needs are diaper packs, wash cloths, wipes, disposable wipes, water proof diaper change pad, hooded or regular towels, baby wash, nail clippers, digital thermometer.

Then are the feeding and bedding items which also need to be stocked well for a baby. These are fitted sheets for crib, bassinet, cradle and co sleeping, light weight blankets, heavy blankets if needed due to weather changes, burp cloths, feeding bottles and feeding pillow.
